Company Roster

Privates

'But who among the private soldiers is named? Have the dead been mentioned except in numbers? Have the cripples been referred to except in the aggregate? Yet it was the rank and file that stood the shock of battle and that gave blow for blow. It was the columns of soldiers that charged the enemy or stood like a rock against fierce assaults. Does history do more with the name of the private soldier than bundle it up with a thousand others and call the combination a regiment?' -- Captain W. J. Patterson, 62d Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment

His occupation was day laborer. In 1880, Obed E. Fox was a carpenter living in village of Easton with his wife Isabella and daughter Sarah L, aged 10, and son Ira M, aged 8. The 1910 census for Licking Township, Clarion County, lists him as Obediah E. Fox, a farmer, still living with his wife Isabella. His pension index card indicates that Isabella filed for a widow's pension in 1913.

He is buried at Callensburg. During the Civil war he served three years in the Union army, having enlisted in Company C, 62d Pennsylvania Infantry. He held membership in the Methodist Church, was an Odd Fellow and member of the Jr. O. U. A. M., and in politics supported the Democratic party. For a time he held the office of constable. His wife, whose maiden name was Isabelle Stover, was born in Licking township Jan. 24. 1843, and survives him with their three children, namely: Loretta, wife of George Haun, of Beaver township. Civil War Veterans' Card File, 1861-1866: [No personal information provided.] Remarks: Discharged from Harrisburg. Rolls show first name as "ABSALOM".

It is my speculation that 15 year old Abraham Mock of Perry Township, Jefferson County, signed up under a false first name and lied about his age. He must then have been caught and returned to his parents after less than a month's service with Company C.

There were several Samuel Myers in the 1860 Census for Clarion County, so I am not sure which one would have become Private Samuel Myers. He was probably a cousin of John and William Myers.

[Listed in Bates as "Not on muster-out roll."]

The 1860 Census for Monroe Township lists William Myers, age 19. In Gust Lowry's letters home he makes frequent references to the Myers boys. Samuel and John E. Myers were not listed in William's family, but a Myers descendent informs me that William and John were brothers, two of nine children of Abner and Barbara (Eaby) Myers. Another brother, Stephen served in the 8th Pennsylvania Volunteers and was wounded at Gaines Mill. Samuel was possibly a cousin.

Widow's and minor's pension filed by Marietta Baker for herself and Francis H. Poulain, et al. in Pennsylvania on 26 June 1889 and 19 August 1889 indicates that Henry Polin was an alias for Henry Poulain. The card lists service in Company C, 33/62d Pa. Inf., and 12 [indecipherable] N.R.C.

Civil War Veterans' Card File, 1861-1866: Age: 19; Occupation: Farmer; Residence: Clarion Co.; Hair: Brown; Eyes: Brown; Complexion: Dark; Height: 5' 9 3/4"

He was buried at Sligo.

Not on muster-out roll indicates fate had not been determined at the close of the war, at which time these rolls were made out. In other company rosters, those who mustered in later than 25 July 1861 were listed as being transferred to the 155th Pennsylvania Volunteer Regiment, Infantry, but for Company C, no soldier is so listed. Those who died before first battle probably were victims of typhoid fever that became rampant during the fall and winter of 1861/62 while the regiment was stationed at Minor's Hill, Va.

The Veteran Reserve Corps, originally called the Invalid Corps, was the military body to which soldiers were transferred when they were not healthy enough to be sent back to their original unit, but not sick or disabled enough to be sent home.
