The brigade pioneers were formed as a detached regiment composed of soldiers from each company of every regiment in the brigade.

Among other jobs after the war, Cribbs worked on an oil crew in Oil Creek, Pa., and ran for a seat on the assembly of New Bethlehem Borough in 1906. Fackender mustered in as a corporal, served as a musician, probably a bugler, and ended his service as a private. Muster rolls indicate the progress of Fackender through his service in the regiment. In March or April 1862, according to the muster roll, he was "detailed in Brass Band." The entry for March & April 1862 in the 62nd Regiment's Field Staff and Band Muster Roll indicates he was a "3d Class Mus", with the note "Present Detached in Brass Band from Co E." According to the May & June 1862 muster roll, he still held the rank of Corporal. In the July & Aug 1862 Company E muster roll he was listed as present, now as a private, and in the Field Staff & Band Muster Roll of the same time period where he is listed as 3d Class Musician, there was the note: "Return to Company by order of War Dept." In the next entry, Sep & Oct 1862, he is listed as a Musician. His rank as Musician continues in subsequent company muster rolls until July & Aug 1863, when he is once again listed as a private. It was as a private that he was killed in action at Bethesda Church, Va on 3 June 1864. He was the brother-in-law of William Huey. Civil War Veterans' Card File, 1861-1866: [See reference from D-62-I and D-155-I card, to B-191-I, but that card is blank.] Was listed in 1860 census as living in Porter Township, Clarion County. He returned to Pennsylvania after the war. Died in or before 1928. His widow was Sarah H. Guntrum.
Bonaparte Hardin	Substitute. Mustered in on 16 July 1863. Transferred to Company D, 155th P.V., 3 July 1864. Transferred to Company B, 191st P. V. on 2 June 1865. Mustered out on 28 June 1865. Civil War Veterans' Card File, 1861-1866: [See reference from Harden, Bonaparte, E 62 I, to Hardin, Bonaparte, B 191 I, but that card is blank.] Last name spelled Harden in Bates. Pension index card confirms Hardin as correct spelling of last name, but Census records have it both ways. In 1830 the spelling looks more like Harden. He was then a head of household aged between 20 and 30. In 1850 Harden was a 47-year old farmer living in Nicholson Township, Fayette County. In 1860 he was still a farmer in Nicholson Township, Fayette County, now aged 56, but the name was spelled Hardin. Bonaparte Hardin was one of the more unusual volunteers. Not only may he have been one of the oldest (age 59 when he mustered in if the Census record identified the right individual), but he is the only soldier in the 62d I have so far discovered who first fought for the Confederates. He enlisted in Company K, 31st Virginia Infantry Regiment on 22 June 1861, but deserted on 25 May 1862 at New Market, Va. It was as a substitute that he joined the 62d. The 1890 Veterans Schedule indicates that Malinda was the widow of Bonaparte Hardin. A note indicates that Hardin had been wounded in the right breast and hand, but in the remarks field is the cryptic note: "No pension — discharge with Atty." Malinda also filed for a widow's pension in 1892[3?]. The service indicates all three Union regiments. Malinda's maiden name appears also to have been Hardin, so it is possible they were cousins. Their marriage appears to have been the second for both. Hardin appears to have had a sad death. According to a genealogy page that cites a military pension record, he was killed by train while lying on railroad tracks intoxicated and was buried at the county home, then known as the Poor House Farm, Fayette County.

Census records indicate Harriger was the correct spelling of his last name and that he resided in Madison Township, Clarion County, before and after the war. Robert Harriger filed for an invalid pension for service in Stewart's Battery. This may be a different individual, or the deserter may have re-enlisted.

Saggesser was listed as "Sagerser" in the muster rolls and appears as "Saggerser" in Bates. He was unable to read or write at time of enlistment, which may have lead to the alternate spellings. According to information supplied by his great great great grandson, there are at least 15-20 variations of spelling on his last name. Saggessers, by many spellings of the name, arrived in Western Pennsylvania from Switzerland a few generations before the Civil War. It is not clear who William's parents were. William was married to Clarissa Elizabeth Downs in Titusville, Pa., on 10 October 1869. They had 3 children, Melissa, Carrie May, and Bertha. The 1870 Census has a William Sagesser and wife [name illegible] listed as residents of Oil Creek Township in Venango County, Pa. William's occupation is listed as Teamster. Information received from his descendent indicates William attempted to return to the farming profession after the war, but his failing health severely limited his ability to provide for his family. At some point the family ended up in Bradford, Pa., which is in McKean County. By the late 1880s the family was penniless and without property. It was at this time that his wife applied for an early pension from the government on behalf of her husband. A doctor's exam dated 19 August 1891 was noted: "Heart and lung disease due to exposure during military service." After a lengthy period of time and correspondence, an early pension was finally granted, but he died soon after on 19 February 1892 in Bradford. His obituary indicates his address had been "Kendall Creek (Bradford)" and that he had been a member of G. A. R. Post No. 141. One report indicates that William was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, but there is no record of him at Oak Hill Cemetery in Bradford, Pa.

Father's occupation was listed as sawyer, both brothers were listed as laborers. Daniel returned to Pennsylvania after the war. His widow, Agnes, filed for a pension on 4 November 1913. Died 12 October 1913, according to Proceedings of the 48th Annual Encampment of the Department of Pennsylvania Grand Army of the Republic (Indiana, 1914), where his surname is spelled Scherk.
John M. Shirk	Mustered in 13 September 1862. Transferred to Company D, 155th P.V., on 3 July 1864. Mustered out with regiment. Father's occupation was listed as sawyer, both brothers were listed as laborers.
John O. Shryock	Drafted; mustered in 16 July 1863. Transferred to Company D, 155th P.V., on 3 July 1864. Transferred to Company B, 191st P. V., 2 June 1865. Shryock, D-155-I, to John A. Shryock, B-191-I.] Although name was spelled at least three different ways, the pension index card confirms spelling of the name as John O. Shryock. He filed for an invalid pension in 1885 while living in Michigan. All three regiments are listed. His wife Nancy filed for a widow's pension in 1917(?) . Both John and Nancy were buried in Boyne City, Michigan. The 1860 Census for Franklin, Wisconsin, lists John Shryock as a 22-year old miller living with his wife Nancy. The 1880 Census for Leland, Michigan, lists John as a 41-year old miller living with his wife Nancy and two daughters. Both John and Nancy were born in Pennsylvania. Both daughters were born in Michigan. Daughter Ida was born in 1862, so John appears to have been living in Michigan, rather than Wisconsin, when he was drafted.

Matthew Thomas	Discharged 22 April 1862. Henderson Thompson	I suspect Thompson mustered in as musician, since Thompson later re-enlisted into Company H, 155th P.V. as a musician and since Bates listed no musicians for Company H. Bates, however, lists him as mustering in as private. There is no record that Thompson transferred to the 155th, so he may never have actually joined the 62d after mustering in, or he may have been discharged by surgeon's certificate from the 62d soon after he joined. The records indicate he enlisted into the 155th, rather than transferring in. He joined the 155th on 2 September 1862, and mustered out 2 June 1865. Listed in Bates and Davis as "Not on muster-out roll" for his service in the 62d. Civil War Veterans' Card File, 1861-1866 [from D - 155 - I card]: Age at Enrollment: 29; Occupation: Carpenter; Residence: Clarion County; Hair: Light; Eyes: Grey; Complexion: [not listed]; Height: [note listed] Listed in 1850 Census for Madison Township, Clarion County, as a 19 year old clerk living at home. Listed in the 1860 Census for Toby Township, Clarion County, as a 26 year old farmer living with a wife and 2 year old son. By 1880, he was living in Cornplanter Township, part of Kane City, in Venango County, employed as "engineer on oil well." He and his wife had eight children then. It is possible he moved to Venango County as part of the Pithole Oil Boom that occurred immediately after the war, although Pithole was almost a ghost town by 1870. The 1900 Census for Cornplanter indicates Thomspon was then an invalid. Catherine is listed as the mother of 12 children. Only one was then living at home. Henderson Thompson, 1833 - 1900, was buried in the Rynd Farm Cemetery in Venango County. Catherine K. Thompson, 1837 - 1912, is also buried there. Thompson never filed for an invalid pension, but Catherine filed for a widow's pension in 1900. The only service record listed was for the 155th.

James H. Watson	Enlisted in Company K, 8th Pennsylvania Volunteers (a three month regiment) on 24 April 1861, and discharged 29 July 1861. The next morning he enlisted in Co. E of the 62d. His mustering in was back dated. He was discharged upon a surgeon's certificate of disability 18 or 20 April 1863. He tried to re-enlist later but was rejected. John Winters	The record is confused. May have enrolled in either Company E or Company K, neither or both. John Winters is also listed among the unassigned soldiers. There is no record of him serving in Company K, other than note in 155th P.V. roster. John Winters transferred to Company B, 155th P. V., 3 July 1864. Transferred to Company E, 191st P. V., 2 June 1865. Although his name was transferred, I am not sure he was present. Bates lists Winters in Company E with note as "Not on muster-out roll." Bates lists Winters among Unassigned Soldiers with note "Transferred to Company B, 155th regiment P. V., 3 July 1864." According to the CWVCF, two days after John Winters enrolled as a private in Company E in Meadville, Pa. [29 March 1864], John Winters enrolled as a private in Company H of the 4th Pennsylvania Cavalry [31 March 1864]. Both men were listed as aged 23. No addtional personal information is listed for the cavalry volunteer. He was captured 10 December 1864 and confined at Salisbury, N. C. It appears Winters enrolled in the 62d, changed his mind and served in the cavalry, instead, creating records that were never cleared up. If all the John Winters are the same man this is his personal information from Civil War Veterans' Card File, 1861-1866: Age at Enrollment: 23; Occupation: Laborer; Residence: Clarion County (Born) Buffalo, New York; Hair: Brown; Eyes: Blue; Complexion: Dark; Height: 5'8 1/2" Remarks: (Not on M.O. Roll. Bates). No further record available.

NOTES: Armstrong County Pennsylvania Genealogy Project includes a transcription of Robert Walker Smith's History of Armstrong County, Pennsylvania (Chicago: Waterman, Watkins & Co., 1883), which contains information about the 62d Pennsylvania. Unfortunately the roster for Company D listed there is incomplete, and information concerning Company G is inaccurate. The roster is for Company G of the 63d Pennsylvania, not the 62d. I don't know whether the error is in the original or the transcription.

Not on muster-out roll indicates fate had not been determined at the close of the war, at which time these rolls were made out. Those who died before first battle probably were victims of typhoid fever that became rampant during the fall and winter of 1861/62 while the regiment was stationed at Minor's Hill, Va.

The Veteran Reserve Corps, originally called the Invalid Corps, was the military body to which soldiers were transferred when they were not healthy enough to be sent back to their original unit, but not sick or disabled enough to be sent home.
