Dis. for Wounds rec'd in action. Rolls spell last name Christie [but preferred spelling was Christy]. [Missing information: Occupation: Farmer; Hair: Dark; Eyes: Grey; Complexion: Fair.]

Accoring to information I have received from Joanne Christy Womer, a descendant, he was treated at the Judicary Square Hospital, Washington, DC, from May until 1 July 1864 and then transferred to Baltimore, then to Annapolis, and then to Little York, PA. He was discharged 28 March 1865 at the USA General Hospital in York. His left leg was impaired from a gunshot wound of the upper thigh, injury to hip joint and femur. They believe the sciatic nerve was injured. He could not raise his left foot from the floor, so he had to drag it and walk very lame with a cane (partial paralysis of left leg).

He was the son of William and Nancy (Wilson) Christy born Circa 1827 in Washington Township, Butler County. He died 27 November 1894 in Venango Township, Butler County. He was not a brother of Andrew or Oliver Christy.

My thanks to Joanne Christy Womer for the information and clarification she has provided.

Charles Dunbar, aka Samuel Geissinger

Deserted 26 December 1862.

Civil War Veterans' Card File, 1861-1866: Age at Enrollment: 24; Occupation: Blacksmith; Residence: Pittsburgh; Hair: Dark; Eyes: Brown; Complexion: Dark; Height: 5'6". Remarks: Deserted 8- -62. Harrisons Landing.

In 1897 Samuel Geissinger filed an invalid pension claim in which he indicated that Charles Dunbar was an alias. According to the pension record he served both in the 62d Pennsylvania and Company B of the 6th Ohio Cavalry. He mustered in the later regiment as a private on 1 December 1863 and mustered out 27 June 1865. His age at enrollment was listed as 35.

On 6 February 1907 he filed for a state bounty of $100 that he claimed was due him from the state of Pennsylvania. His request was denied because he had been a deserter, A law passed in 1888 had relieved soldiers who subsequently served and were honorably discharged from the charge of desertion, so Geissinger's problem was his use of an alias. He appealed, but his case was not settled until 21 November 1912, with the verdict in his favor.

Adam Ehni

Discharged on surgeon's certificate, 20 September 1861.

Civil War Veterans' Card File, 1861-1866 [under Ehin, Adam]: Age at Enrollment: 36; Occupation: Locksmith; Residence: Pittsburgh, Pa.; Hair: Light; Eyes: Gray; Complexion: Light; Height: 5'7". Remarks: Discharge S.C. of D. Ledger shows last name as Ehni.

I believe Ehni started the war in the Minersville Artillerists from Schuylkill County, also know as Company E of the 5th (3 month) P.V. (Infantry). After mustered out on 25 July 1861, Ehni enrolled in Company G of the 62d on 31 July. Altough he is listed as have been discharged on a surgeon's certificate, I think he switched regiments and served with Company G of the 74th, instead. Elni was born in Wurtenburg, and the 74th was a predominently German-born regiment. In addition, his previous service was as an artillerist, and Company G, according to a history of the 74th P.V., was one of the few companies in all of the Union army that employed the use of a new military technology, the rocket launcher. Although the date of his discharge from the 62d was 20 September 1861, and Company G was mustered in on 14 September, Ehni could have joined them before his paperwork was complete or joined the 74th later in Philadelphia or Washington, DC. Ehni ended his life in a national home for disabled veterans in Dayton, Ohio, and is buried in a graveyard nearby. In his pension index card and in other veteran records, Adam Ehni omits his short service in the 62d.

According to a biographical sketch in Valley of the Upper Maumee River (1889), Abel Fisher was a lumber inspector for a railroad company in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was born in Lawrence County, on 29 March 1844 and came from one of the county's pioneer families. After obtaining a common school education, he learned the miller's trade, and was working at mill when he enlisted. During the war he was wounded in the right wrist at the battle of Gaines Mill. This biographical sketch of Kennedy comes from the regimental history of the 103d: "Adjutant Samuel B. Kennedy was a protege of Col. Lehmann, and was among the very first appointments made by the Colonel after he assumed command of the Regiment. Lieut. Alvin H. Alexander had been acting as adjutant of the Regiment, and the advent of Kennedy, to supplant Alexander, without the concurrence of Col. Finlay, caused some friction between the Colonel and some of the Company officers. Adjutant Kennedy was suave and tactful, and soon gained the good will of both officers and men. He was accidenttally wounded by a shot from a revolver in the hands of Capt. Laughlin, at Suffolk, Va., and as a result was discharged on Surgeon's certificate, Nov. 29, 1862. Adjutant Kennedy's father kept a gun store on 5th Avenue, Pittsburgh, Pa., during and subsequent to the war, and for a ime after he left the army the Adjutant was identified with the business, but seemed always as though he desired to keep aloof from his former comrades in arms.

Civil War Veterans' Card File, 1861-1866: Age at Enrollment: 18; Occupation: Farmer; Residence: Beam, Va.; Hair: Light; Eyes: Grey; Complexion: Light; Height: 5'7"

Although the file card indicated Reed's place of birth was Beam, Va., that appears to be a mistranscription of Beaver, Pa. According to family history, he was an orphan from Beaver County, Pa., and he was buried in Grandview Cemetery, Beaver Falls, PA. The 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses corroborate that he was born in Pennsylvania. In 1870, Reed was living in Clinton Township in Venango County. His occupation was "drilling for oil." In 1880, he was back in Beaver County, living in Moon Township, working as a laborer and living with his wife Catharine and three children under the age of 6.

He may have been as young as 16 when he joined the regiment. In 1860, his age was listed as 15. His age, however, does not match in other census records.

Christian Zeitler

Wounded at Bethesda Church (Cold Harbor), 3 June 1864. He was shot in the left arm, midway between the shoulder at elbow. Mustered out with company, 13 July 1864. Although mustered out, rather than discharged for medical reasons, he was admitted to Armory Square General Hospital in Washington DC on 12 June 1864, nine days after his injury, transferred to another hospital, and never rejoined the regiment. He applied for a disability pension on July 26, 1864.

Zeitler was born in Adelsheim, in Mosbach. His entire family came to the United States in the early to mid 1850s, settling in Baltimore, where most of them remained. His parents, Christian and Mary Zeitler, lived there till their deaths, as did at least two sisters. Christian apparently came to Allegheny, then a separate city from Pittsburgh, by himself from Baltimore, for reasons unknown. It is not known what he did prior to his enlistment. He returned to Allegheny City after the war. Family sources report that he suffered a lifelong injury as a result his wound. He filed for an invalid pension on 29 July 1864. He married Margaret Sellman on 12 January 1869. In the 1870 census, he is listed in Ward 3 of Allegheny City. He was then a citizen, and his occupation is listed as "policeman." He was probably a park policeman. Later occupations included shoemaker, laborer, packer, and agent. Christian and Maggie had nine children. Only four, all girls, lived to adulthood. Katherine, Margaret, Barbara, and Anna. He died on 29 December 1903 and is buried in Uniondale Cemetery in Pittsburgh.

Civil War Veterans' Card File, 1861-1866: Age at Enrollment: 21; Occupation: Shoemaker; Residence: Baltimore, Md.; Hair: Dark; Eyes: Gray; Complexion: Light; Height: 5'6"; Remarks: Rolls spell last name Zeitler.

Erroneously listed as Zeither in Bates. In addition to the Zeither misspelling, Christian Zeitler's name has appeared erroneously in other documents or plaques as Zettler, Beitler, and even Siebert.

Thanks to David Lawrence, his great-great grandson, for sending me the correct spelling of his name and additional information.

Notes

Not on muster-out roll indicates fate had not been determined at the close of the war, at which time these rolls were made out. Those who died before first battle probably were victims of typhoid fever that became rampant during the fall and winter of 1861/62 while the regiment was stationed at Minor's Hill, Va.

The Veteran Reserve Corps, originally called the Invalid Corps, was the military body to which soldiers were transferred when they were not healthy enough to be sent back to their original unit, but not sick or disabled enough to be sent home.
