62d Pennsylvania Volunteers

Company H
St. Clair Guards (Allegheny County)

62d Pennsylvania Monument at Gettysburg

Company Origins

Company H was recruited by Captain Thomas Espy principally around the communities of Bethel Park and Upper St. Clair. The St. Clair Guards were already formed as a local militia in 1860 perhaps in response to the visit to Pittsburgh by the Chicago Zouaves. Their Colors were purchased in 1860 at a cost of $46.25. Upon arrival in Harrisburg the Colors were returned to Capt. Espy's family when it was learned that company flags were not permitted..

Most volunteers in Company H signed up for the new regiment on the Fourth of July, even if they were not officially mustered in until later. An immense body of Pittsburgh's Home Guard held a grand parade on the Fourth and heard great orators, none more stem-winding as Colonel Black, who officially began organizing his regiment that day.

Espy was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church, and a high percentage of the volunteers in this company, especially the officer corps, came from that church, including several from Espy's own family.

Privates

'But who among the private soldiers is named? Have the dead been mentioned except in numbers? Have the cripples been referred to except in the aggregate? Yet it was the rank and file that stood the shock of battle and that gave blow for blow. It was the columns of soldiers that charged the enemy or stood like a rock against fierce assaults. Does history do more with the name of the private soldier than bundle it up with a thousand others and call the combination a regiment?' -- Captain W. J. Patterson, 62d Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment"

After the war, he was an active member of the Samuel J. Rosenberry Post, Grand Army of the Republic, Eau Claire, Pennsylvania, a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Eau Claire, Pennsylvania. He was wounded in the right shoulder at the Battle of the Wilderness at Sanders Field on 5 May 1864. He was also accidentally shot in the hip in February 1864, while in winter quarters at Licking Run, near Warrenton, Virginia. A colored charcoal drawing of John is courtesy of Lee A. Hillard. It was provided to him by David Ross Snyder, John's great great grandson. It was probably drawn from a tintype or daguerreotype made while John was in the service.

Civil War Veterans' Card File, 1861-1866: Age at Enrollment: 21; Occupation: Student; Residence: Allegheny County; Hair: Black; Eyes: Blue; Complexion: Dark; Height: 5'8 1/2"

David Randall Lyon was born on a farm in Snowden Township, Allegheny County, near Library. He graduated from the University of Michigan medical school in March of 1867, but he had a troubled life after that. When one brother died in 1871, the estate notes that David was not good for a $25 debt. In an era when divorce was rare, his wife successfully sued for divorce on grounds of neglect, physical and mental cruelty, and drunkenness. After he was admitted to the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' home in Sandusky, the record from a physical examination indicated his body was wrecked. He was awarded a veteran's pension of $12 per month for disease of the chest in 1892. About a month later, Lyon died, on 3 July 1892 at the home, most likely of tuberculosis. He was buried on the grounds.

My thanks to Richard Buck, who has researched David R. Lyon for over 25 years.

Named "Dad" Pollock in Watson album and listed as a member of Company D. Further note in the album indicates he died in Bell Island Prison, Richmond, Va. There are two other Pollocks, but none listed in Company D, so it is not clear, for sure, who is meant. John Pollack of Company E died early in the war, and Alva, at age 31, was one of the older volunteers. It is possible that, as did other volunteers, "Dad" mustered in to one company but served with another.

Not on muster-out roll indicates fate had not been determined at the close of the war, at which time these rolls were made out. Those who died before first battle probably were victims of typhoid fever that became rampant during the fall and winter of 1861/62 while the regiment was stationed at Minor's Hill, Va.

The Veteran Reserve Corps, originally called the Invalid Corps, was the military body to which soldiers were transferred when they were not healthy enough to be sent back to their original unit, but not sick or disabled enough to be sent home.
